Dentist in Olathe, KS
All our professionals at Sunnybrook Family & Cosmetic Dentistry maintain the highest levels of accreditation and pursue ongoing education to stay abreast of the latest trends in dentistry.
Dan Bednarczyk, D.D.S.
Dr. Dan Bednarczyk received a Bachelor of Science in Genetics from the University of Kansas. He remained in Lawrence for two more years doing post-graduate teaching and research in Molecular Biology. Dr. Bednarczyk graduated with his Doctorate from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry in 2001. Upon graduation from Dental School, Dr. Bednarczyk was awarded the AAOMS Implantology Award for his superior work with the placement and restoration of dental implants. He has since completed advanced training and coursework in the surgical placement of dental implants.
Following graduation, he became a General Practice Resident at the University of Iowa-Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City. This program furthered his cosmetic and restorative skills in addition to providing advanced clinical training in oral surgery and intravenous sedation. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Bednarczyk relocated to Denver and was an associate in a large group practice for three years. Very soon after the birth of their first child, the Bednarczyks returned home to Johnson County. He opened Sunnybrook Dental in November of 2006.
Dr. Bednarczyk completed the requirements and became a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry in 2009, recognizing his leadership in the field. He is currently working towards his requirements for the distinction of Master of the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Dan is a member of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, and his surgical residency at Iowa and subsequent continuing education has earned him a special sedation certificate, in which he is one of only a few dentists in the state with this level of certification. He is also one of only a handful of dentists in the state that has staff privileges at three local hospitals. Dr. Dan’s brother is part of the JCDS program and was his main inspiration to obtaining this level of distinction in sedation dentistry - so he can provide him and many other patients with the dental care they need, but find it difficult to receive.
He is a member of the American Dental Association, Kansas Dental Association and Fifth District Dental Society. Dr. Dan has volunteered his dentistry at free clinics in The Dominican Republic and Venezuela, along with the local organizations of Kansas Mission of Mercy, Missouri Mission of Mercy, and he was one of the founding members of and actively volunteers for TeamSmile in Kansas City.
Dr. Dan enjoys playing golf in his spare time, but he admits that skiing is the only sport he does well! Most of his spare time is spent with his wife and kids, and shuttling them to their various activities. He coaches for a variety of the teams that his son and daughter are a part of, although he doesn’t do much of the teaching for his daughter’s love for ballet and involvement in KC Ballet. As a family, they try to get to Colorado or Montana for camping, fishing and skiing each year.
Rick Hammel, D.D.S.
Dr. Rick Hammel attended Kansas State University and graduated with his Doctorate from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry in 1977. Upon graduation, he wanted to be close to family and returned to his hometown of Clay Center. Dr. Rick practiced there for over 38 years, until he retired and sold to again move closer to his children and grandchildren in Olathe in 2015.
Dr. Hammel is passionate about helping fearful patients and patients with disabilities to get the dental care that they need to improve their health and their lives. A well-known and respected dental innovator, he helped establish and implement sedation dentistry in Kansas for patients that are fearful, anxious, or have disabilities that make receiving dental care very difficult for them. Dr. Rick continued on with his education and completed his residency in IV Conscious Sedation at the University of Georgia in Augusta, and he received his Fellowship in the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation.
Dr. Hammel and his wife also have served with, and continue to serve for, The Belize Mission Project, providing dental care to children and adults in impoverished areas of the country. Their experiences with this mission inspired them to organize and begin the Clay Center Dental Mission project that brought dentists and hygienists from all over the country to help provide free dental care to those in need in North central Kansas.
Outside of Dentistry, Rick enjoys golfing and making hand-thrown pottery in his home studio. You can find his pieces for sale at various art fairs and at the Kansas City Clay Guild, and even at Sunnybrook Dental! The Hammels are proud parents of two daughters, who are an LPGA professional in the area, and an entrepreneur daughter in San Francisco. They have five grandchildren, and love spending as much time with them, and following all of their activities.
You’ll see Dr. Hammel with us on Thursdays and Fridays.

She values the relationships she’s built over the years with our patients.

Rachel Burghart, R.D.H.
Hygienist/Internal Marketing Coordinator
Rachel received her Bachelor of Arts in Human Biology from the University of Kansas in 2009, and joined our team as Patient Coordinator immediately after finishing. She was promoted to Office Administrator, and enjoyed her time on the "business" side of dentistry, but ultimately wanted to branch over to direct patient care. While still a part of our team, she cut back her hours and continued on to receive her second degree, a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene from UMKC’s School of Dentistry. She is fascinated by science and loves to read the most current research on anything and everything health-related!
Rachel and her husband have a young son and daughter. They spend as much time with their families as possible with frequent get togethers. They love getting outdoors with their kids and are having fun watching their son get started in soccer! You can also find them watching / supporting anything related to their alma mater... Rock Chalk!

After a year with us, Erin furthered her education and received an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Dental Hygiene from Johnson County Community College in 2014. She loves her role as one of our hygienists and getting to know all of her patients!
Erin married her high school sweetheart, and they're having fun settling into their first house in their hometown of Stilwell. Brandon and her enjoy spending time with family, friends, and their two dogs, Koda and Rudy! They both love watching all of the professional Kansas City sports teams be successful!
Paula Herrman, R.D.H.
Paula has been in the dental field since 2010, starting as a receptionist and becoming inspired to work more with patients directly. She began dental assisting, completed her Certified Dental Assisting studies, and then continued on to follow her goals to become a Dental Hygienist. She received her Associate of Applied Science degree in Dental Hygiene through Johnson County Community College in 2016. Paula loves all aspects of the dental practice, but she has definitely found her niche in direct patient care, as a dental hygienist, where she has the most time to get to know her patients one-on-one.
Paula and her husband, her high school sweetheart, have been married since 2012. They have two son, Mack and Gareth. She loves all things soccer - she and her boys are Sporting KC's biggest fans, and they go to as many games as they can. She also loves binge watching any great series on Netflix!
